Native Hedge Feeds Wildlife Nannyberry Viburnum, Viburnum lentago, is a native shrubby tree. It is a hardy upright growing shrub with glossy green foliage that turns red-purple in fall. The creamy white flat-topped flower clusters in spring mature into small blue-black fruit. They provide winter food for birds and wildlife. Nannyberry is a large native shrub that will mature to 20' and 10' wide. It can be used as a large shrub or pruned into a small tree. The tendency for this shrub to sucker lends itself to a more open and leggy form, which can be used for windbreaks, hedges, or as a screen. It prefers full to part sun and is one of the more tolerant woody plants in shady sites. Nannyberry prefers loam soil with ample moisture. Pruning is required to remove suckers if a tree form is desired. Viburnum tends to be multi-season plant with ornamental value throughout the season. *Heads of White Flowers in Spring *Suckering Habit *Large Shrub or Small Tree

My Square Foot Garden
After constructing my first ladder, I placed it in one of the SFG boxes. It looks like I can plant tomatoes in each of 4 squares (2 x 2) and they will be supported by the one ladder. This is a little different than my plan to plant 4 squares along one edge but I think it will work out well.

Spring Flowering Garden
After a long dreary winter we all look forward to the signs of spring. This includes the early blooming spring flower bulbs. But spring is not the time to think about planting them.
Spring flowering bulbs should be planted in the fall. If your starting a new garden you'll need to evaluate the site. Is there turf grass that needs to be removed? What about roots from nearby trees or shrubs? Is the soil rocky, clay, or sandy? Or maybe you want to do a raised bed garden. You'll want to have the garden bed prepared before the fall planting time.

Winter Irrigation
Obviously in the northern climates winter irrigation would not be required. In warmer climates winter usually brings more moisture than the summer so irrigation requirements would be far less since many plants are dormant. Even if plants are not dormant their water needs should be satisfied by rainfall. If it is a particularly dry winter additional irrigation may be needed.
