One look at the Root Assassin shovel’s saw-toothed blade, and you know this tool means business. Nevertheless, I was skeptical. All my life I’ve gardened in dense clay soil, and my current garden is on a rocky ridge where I deal with both clay and stones. I doubted even this aggressive-looking shovel would be up to the challenging task.

Although you will have variations with every plant, there is some gardening advice that is universal and that goes for any plant.

The thing to remember while gardening is to start small. A small plant bed, about 25 or 30 feet square is perfect, is just enough room for about 30 plants. This will give you a chance to try out your green thumb and if you find that you enjoy your garden you can always expand and increase your plantings.

The next thing you will want to do is choose a site. Gardening must be done in an area that gets at least six hours of sunlight

Chives

Chives have a mild onion flavor and are used in a variety of recipes. Provide about 4 to 6 hours of sunlight and average room temperatures. Start harvesting as needed when plants reach 6 inches tall but leave at least 2 inches of plant so it will continue to grow.

Oregano

Oregano may be one of the easiest herbs to grow indoors. It is commonly used in many Italian recipes and sauces. Provide 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily. Use a cactus soil mix or similar well drained sandy soil. Start harvesting as needed when plant is about 6" tall leaving at least 2 leaves to allow the plant to continue growing.

Rosemary

Rosemary is another very easy to grow hern for indoor winter gardening. Provide a  minimum of 6 hours of sunlight and use a well drained soil mix like cactus soil mix. Start harvesting stems when the plant reaches at least 6 inches tall. Since Rosemary is a slow growing plant limit your harvesting to no more than 1/3 of the plant at any one time.

Parsley

Although Parsley is mainly seen as a garnish on the plate it is widely used in many dishes such as vegetables, roasts, steaks, chicken and fish. Plant in most all purpose potting mixes and provide at least 6 hours of sunlight. Harvest stems after the plant is established and leave at least 2 inches of stem to allow continued growth.

Thyme

Thyme is widely used in many meat and stew recipes. Provide average room temperatures and 6+ hours of sunlight. Plant Thyme in a well drained sandy soil mix. Allow the plant to get established before harvesting. You should leave about 3 inches of plant to allow it to continue growing.
