Mexican Sour Gherkin Cucumber Seeds

Looking like lilliputian watermelons with their distinctive dark and light green "rinds, they make up in character what they lack in size. The Mexican Sour Gherkin (Melothria scabra) is an heirloom native to Mexico and Central America, where it's known as sandita (little watermelon). But it tastes neither sour nor like a watermelon; the palm-sized fruit is bright and tangy on the tongue, like cucumber with a twist of lemon.

Summer Squash

Another popular warm season crop is the summer squash. Squash seeds will not germinate in cold soil. Using black plastic mulch can help increase soil temperature sooner. When the soil temperature reaches about 60 degrees at a 4 inches deep, punch holes in the plastic and plant the seeds. You can plant squash seeds 4 to six inches apart but thin them to about 12 inches apart in rows that are 3 feet apart. Alternatively squash can be planted in hills. Plant 2 or 3 seeds into hills that are spaced 3 to 44 feet apart and rows that are 4 to 6 feet apart.

Zone 8 planting times are roughly mid April through mid May for the spring planting. A fall crop may be planted in August.

Raised Garden Beds

Raised bed gardens are used when the native soil is too poor or is difficult to work. Raised garden beds are also used to extend the growing season. Since the soil in a raised bed garden will warm up quicker in the spring time you can start planting sooner.

Raised Bed Garden

A raised garden bed can be created simply by mounding soil up above the natural soil level. You can also build a frame to create a raised garden bed. You can use wood, blocks, stone or other materials to build your raised garden bed. The choice is up to you to use something that compliments the rest of your landscape and your budget when building your raised bed garden.

A Look At Tillers For Your Gardening Adventures

A garden tiller is a tool that people use to break up hard earth for a new garden or to recondition the soil in an established one. These tillers have rotary blades that slowly churn the soil, which aerates and evenly redistribute the nutrients in it. Some gardeners choose to add materials to the soil before tilling. This is one way of adjusting a soil's alkaline or acid composition. Since nutrients are redistributed throughout the soil, crops that are grown in tilled ground tend to grow better than those that are not. There are several different types of tillers available for gardeners to rent or purchase.
