Summer Squash: "Another popular warm season crop is the summer squash. Squash seeds will not germinate in cold soil. Using black plastic mulch can help increase soil temperature sooner. When the soil temperature reaches about 60 degrees at a 4 inches deep, punch holes in the plastic and plant the seeds. You can plant squash seeds 4 to six inches apart but thin them to about 12 inches apart in rows that are 3 feet apart. Alternatively squash can be planted in hills. Plant 2 or 3 seeds into hills that are spaced 3 to 44 feet apart and rows that are 4 to 6 feet apart."
